Wandering around Melide before supper last night at about 6.30 we found an area populated with pubs and restaurants (all deserted because of the “early” hour) and stopped for a beer at a particularly attractive pub. We found a bar/cafe serving paella close to our digs and thoroughly enjoyed with a glass (or two) of a wine from the Rioja region recommended by our host.
Breakfast was typical (thick slices of bread with ham and cheese) but we were also spoilt by our energetic, motherly hostess who could not speak a word of English with toasted croissants and warm churros. From her I learned a new Spanish word: wee fee 🙂 ……. WiFi.
We set off later than usual this morning because today’s stage was only 14kms…….. almost like a rest day :-).
The weather was warm and humid and within an hour we were in t-shirts and I regretted not having worn shorts. As anticipated there were many more pilgrims on the road but less than expected all exchanging the traditional greetings:
“Hola!”
“Buen Camino”
“Gracias”
A novelty for us was encountering pilgrims on bicycles who often would come from behind unheard and wiz past giving one quite a fright ….. a timeous “hola” would have been helpful.
The walk was for the best part easy going and easy under foot (“gentleman’s walk” says Derrick) but there were a few steepish climbs and descents with which my struggling knee was unhappy (bursitis ?).
The route took us through towns and villages, farms and eucalyptus forests, over stepping stones and bridges; pretty and picturesque.
We arrived in Arzua just before one o’clock and after a shower had lunch in the restaurant; Derrick had a stewed green bean/tomato dish, I had pork ribs and we finished with a chocolate almond tart. Our accommodation is very comfortable and the staff are really charming and helpful.
We have two days of walking left; 38kms.
Blessings and love from Galicia.
