Last night we stayed in the hotel (very comfortable) and after a few welcome beers had supper in the restaurant. Derrick had a ‘complete’ hamburger (bacon, cheese de luxe) and I had a shrimp omelette; we were both happily replete and retired for a long night’s rest.
After a great breakfast we visited the beautiful church opposite the hotel before wandering through the main square down to the cathedral. Today is the 7th anniversary of Sue’s passing (Derrick’s wife) and we wanted to say Mass. Morning prayer was finishing as we entered the cathedral and Mass followed directly. After Mass, a woman approached and asked if we were pilgrims. She was the sacristan and took us around the cathedral explaining the history (dates back to 12th century) showing us the splendid altar – their Sistine Chapel with it’s painted ceiling – and some of the magnificent side chapels after which she gave us a stamp in our pilgrim passports. We stayed a little longer praying before the Blessed Sacrament. A wonderfully fulfilling morning.
After a cup of hot chocolate with churros we wandered around this beautiful old city and walked “the wall”. This is the only city in the world to be surrounded by a completely intact Roman wall built in the 4th century. The wall is 2kms long and 8.5m high. Crowds of school children passed us running along the wall with their teachers 🙂
Having had our exercise for the day we retired for an afternoon rest.
Tomorrow’s walk is long (28km) but not difficult. I’m not sure I’ll manage with my knee and if still in serious discomfort in the morning, I may take another day’s rest and get a transfer to our next stop. However I really do want to walk.
Peace be with you.
What an interesting town. Hope your knee feels better. Can you strap it ? Xxx
