Checking at the Turkish Airlines counter was painless and although we weren’t seated together on the flight to Istanbul we ended up sitting together in the two seats at an emergency exit 🙂
Before departure we toasted our new adventure with a couple G&Ts in one of the lounges. Neither of us got much/any sleep on the plane ( is one really expected to sleep upright ..?) but enjoyed a movie or two; large hamburger patty for supper (thankfully we’ll prepared).
We had a four hour stopover (neither of us feeling particularly joyful at 4am) and slept much of the flight to Geneva (yes it is possible to sleep upright)….again we had the benefit of extra legroom at an emergency exit.
The drive to Les Houches (which is in France ) in the shuttle with two others was picturesque and relaxed. Our room was not ready when we arrived at the hotel around 1pm and we bussed through to Chamonix (sham-o-knee) …. only about 5 kms – to buy boot spikes and gaiters in case of ice and deep snow.
Back at the hotel we unpacked and prepped for our first day of walking tomorrow. Rob went for a swim and sauna before a shower.
Tomorrow we walk to Les Contamines …. 16 kms …… ascend from 1007m to 1653m and down again to 1164m.
In the bar this evening (carbo-loading) we met a Jo’burg couple (my age) now living in California who are following the same route as we are ….. and shared their trepidation
… we are feeling strong
