Last night we arrived in the dining restaurant at 7pm for my birthday celebration. Perfect ambiance; table for two snuggled at a picture window looking out over the forest and distant mountains, serenaded by the best of Swiss classic oom pah pah, mountain yodeling and tiekiedraai courtesy of a local radio DJ, a carafe of drinkable white wine and …. food! We hadn’t eaten since breakfast and devoured the tasty cheese, bacon salad with sliced grape pieces before our host had reached the other side of the room. Main course was rice with a mushroom and something casserole which we repeated followed by chocolate mousse 🙃. We were back in the room by eight in time to watch England play Tunisia (Harry scored two).
After a modest breakfast this morning we set out in perfect hiking conditions; clear blue skies, warm but not hot, little touch of a breeze. The first 6km were idyllic; gentle walk around the lake then pretty, shaded undulating forest track with little gradient. But this was just the prelude.
The next 11km took us up, over and down a mountain. The first km of the climb followed a dry waterfall bed before a short level section crossing a few streams – one with no visible footholds above water (thankful for waterproof, ankle high boots). The next two km cranked up the gradient and then leaving the tree line, the last km was not in like climbing a steep staircase; not for the faint or weak hearted.
Having ascended 1000m we stopped at Alp Bovine, a refreshment stop, for lunch; freshly prepared rosti with ham, carrot cake and coke/beer.
After a further short ascent we started the long climb down …… Janowellfine. Some sections very pleasant, some challenging and some short sharp sections torturous.
Trient is a small Swiss village in a valley. Our hotel is basic but pleasant; was once a convent 😊
