Last night we were overrun by a bus load of Asians who arrived at the hotel just in time to brutalise the buffet; canteen fare at best.
This morning we set out in beautiful walking weather on an easy but long trek to Lake Bled; only 9 kms by road but 24kms hiking across the Carniolan plain taking in some of the sights.
The route was very varied in terrain; open farm lands, shaded forest, gravel paths and tarred road; cows, tractors, railway crossing, quaint villages et al. Generally a gentle undulating path but with a sharp ascent up to St Catherine’s Church (pretty inside) through the forest passing a colourful bee farm and from which we had splendid views over the farm lands below stretching into the majestic mountains(and protein bar lunch). Throughout day the landscape was stunning.
From the church we descended to Vingtar Gorge carved 150m deep into the mountain by the strong flowing Radovna River. We followed a narrow boardwalk fitted into the mountain a few meters above the water running for about 2kms along the gorge; really spectacular and difficult to capture the beauty on camera.
By now we’d walked about 20kms and we couldn’t wait to finish ( I kept a keen eye out for a taxi). The last few kms seemed endless but the surreal prettiness of Lake Bled and surrounds was enough encouragement to keep up the pace.
Bled is a tourist magnet and even now which is not high season, we were aware of lots of people speaking many languages; this could be a hot spot in France or Italy.
Our hotel is just off the beaten track, a family run pension, and we were welcomed with a medicinal schnapps which worked wonders !
Tomorrow is a welcome rest day.
