Very early start this morning after a great evening in a restaurant in an old disused brewery; stuffed calamari, pita, fried liver and manti starters followed by (Italian) dessert. We left the hotel at 4.30 to catch a 7am flight to Ljubljana (2 hour flight). We arrived at the hotel shortly after nine (one hour time difference) and not surprisingly our room wasn’t ready. We were advised to explore the city sights before the rain returned.
The building which houses our small boutique hotel dates back to the fifteenth century; quaint, cosy, confusing and perfectly situated in the old historic centre. We headed directly to the funicular up to the castle which offered splendid views of the city and a fascinating glimpse of Slovenia’s complex history over the last 2500 years including some weapons, a knights armor and a small chapel.
Down again we meandered through the fresh foods market, devoured an interesting slice of pizza ….. and ice cream.
After a couple hours rest in the afternoon we explored further thoroughly enchanted with this beautiful city before hopping on a cruise as the rain arrived inviting us to relax and enjoy an early sundowner.
Tomorrow we make for the mountains to start our hike on Monday.
