The restaurant in our hotel specializes in deer. I had deer goulash with polenta and Rob had deer sirloin; devoured with gusto.
The story of today’s long hike (19km) is long steep ascent (976m) and equally long descent.
St Jacobs Church is visible from our hotel; a small white church sitting on top of a mountain (about 550m higher). The weather was lovely when we set out and we got our first glimpse of the beautiful mountains and forests all around us. Took us about 2 hours to get up to the church which while being a relentless climb was not difficult.
However the next 450m ascent which took us 1,5hrs was challenging; steep, very steep, ridiculously steep; grueling. Very close to the top we spooked a flock of sheep with their shepherd calling them to order. We wrote our names in the log book at the top and were more than ready to come down.
Another 1,5 hrs walking along the mountain ridge and ledges in the mountain side before we started descending (at Hudicev hut).
The path down was steep and slippery; mud and tree roots spread like veins across the surface. We’d descended about 200m when I slipped a little awkwardly grateful not to have injured myself. Shortly after that we landed on a rough road used by forestry and we decided to follow that rather than the hiking trail. That added kms to the walk but we were able to move at a brisker pace without the risk.
A few kms from home it started raining with thunder and lightning and by the time we got back to the hotel we were indeed wet and weary.
Tomorrow’s hike promises to be easier 😊
